A Job vs. A Career?

Those of you who read this blog know I whine about my job sometimes. I was loving being a stay at home mom to my three but then the recession hit and Hubby and I decided we liked paying rent and eating more. So back to work I went (Hubby owns his own small food business). Going back to work for a major corporation provided us with benefits, a 401K and other cool perks. I've been at this job for about 3 years and I would say things range from stable to improving slightly. I've recently been approached by a recruiter about a couple of jobs that would be a major step up in private equity. I've decided nothing ventured nothing gained and am exploring these options. I was thinking about it and my hesitation stems from the fact that moving on and up the ladder would be an admission (and an acceptance) that this is not just a job I am doing until things turn around allowing me to return to my stay at home life. It's an actual career. It woul dmean longer hours and more work related stress. It would also likely mean a better salary Not that there is anything wrong with acepting this as a career. It's just a mental shift I am kind of struggling with. Thoughts? Suggestions? Words of Wisdom? Anyone?

  1. You owe it to yourself to explore. Years from now you do not want to look back on this time and say ..... "I wonder if?"
    Best wishes!!

  2. As my kids have gotten older, as much as I've enjoyed a flex schedule, volunteering, etc, I've regretting leaving my "career". You have nothing to lose by exploring your options.

  3. Like others have said, it does not hurt to explore your options. I am a full-time lawyer and a mom, and I have to say I am miserable at times. :)
